Host: What motivated you to choose the Legal sector as a domain of work and how has been your career span?

Abhishek: What motivated me to choose legal sector as my domain of work is that the legal profession is often associated with respect and prestige, as lawyers are seen as trusted advisors and experts in their field. Lawyers have the power to shape the legal framework that governs society, and they play a critical role in upholding justice and protecting individual rights. This can be incredibly rewarding work, as you have the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives. For me, pursuing a career in law was an ideal lifelong career as I have been passionate about the field and committed to making a positive impact on the world around myself. Pursuing a career in law allows individuals to engage in meaningful work that has justice and protecting fundamental human rights at its core.

Host: How did you grow your interest in this field, and what do you think about your current position, compared to your previous profession? (If you have changed your profession)

Abhishek: Law is an ideal academic path for those who enjoy challenging tasks, solving puzzles, and engaging in critical thinking. My interest in this field has grown over time as it provides an intellectually stimulating and rewarding career that allows individuals to make a real impact on society. Indeed, the career path of a lawyer is a complex and demanding one as they are often tasked with managing multiple cases at once, each with its own unique set of challenges and complexities. As I started my career as a junior lawyer in Jharkhand High Court, then joined Mahindra Finance, shifted to Schindler, then Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors Finance Ltd., Mahindra Housing and today, I am working as a Chief Legal Counsel with Volkswagen Finance, Mumbai. There has been a drastic shift from litigation to the corporate sector but the experience of this career span has been tremendous as working in law can indeed be a very fulfilling career choice is what I think today.

Host: Key lessons or experiences that have enriched you and are currently aiding you in your work profile.

Abhishek: There are endless lessons and experiences that constantly aid me and enrich me in my profile. Law offers endless complex problems to solve and demands a wide variety of skills. It requires individuals to have excellent communication, research, writing, and analytical skills, and the ability to think critically and creatively. It also demands a strong sense of ethics and a commitment to serving others. Whether you are representing a client in court, advising a business on legal matters, or drafting legislation that will affect thousands of people, you have the power to shape the course of people's lives. This can lead to collaborate with other legal professionals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Law is an intellectually challenging course of study that requires constant stimulation of the mind. The legal profession demands individuals to have a keen eye for detail, excellent analytical skills, and a strong ability to think critically and creatively. Law also involves practical and impractical thinking, as well as thinking outside of the box. Lawyers and legal professionals must be able to approach problems from different angles and consider multiple perspectives in order to find effective solutions. This often involves complex ethical, philosophical, and moral considerations that require careful analysis and consideration. The complexity of these cases means that there are rarely easy fixes or clear-cut answers. This makes the legal profession both stimulating and rewarding, as it requires individuals to bring their best selves to the table and work collaboratively to find the best possible solutions.

Host: What kind of solutions would you like to advise others, especially those who want to take up this profession?

Abhishek: As technology continues to advance, the role of lawyers and legal professionals is evolving rapidly, and it is essential for those entering this field to be aware of these changes and adapt accordingly. The legal profession is becoming more automated, with routine tasks being outsourced to technology and Artificial Intelligence. This means that lawyers and legal professionals will need to develop a different set of skills, including creativity, flexibility, and inventiveness. These skills will be essential for developing innovative solutions and strategies that take advantage of the latest technological advancements. In addition to technological changes, there are also significant shifts occurring in the legal industry in terms of client expectations and the way legal services are delivered. Clients are increasingly looking for more efficient and cost-effective legal services, which is driving changes in the way law firms operate and deliver their services. Aspiring lawyers and legal professionals should keep these changes in mind when choosing their firm and developing their careers. They should be open-minded and always seeking ways to improve and innovate in their work. By doing so, they will be well-positioned to succeed in a rapidly changing legal landscape and make a meaningful contribution to the profession.

The legal profession also provides individuals with the opportunity to engage in lifelong learning, as the law is constantly evolving and changing. This requires individuals to stay up-to-date with the latest legal developments, engage in ongoing professional development, and continue to hone their skills and expertise over the course of their career. Overall, pursuing a career in law provides the opportunity to engage in important work that has justice at its core and to help those in need.
